Exulans IIIn November 1997 the development of a second prototype, Exulans II, was initiated. Although Exulans II will be the platform for testing new structural concepts, it will primarily be used for in-depth flight evaluation of this new concept. Exulans II will feature winglets for improved yaw control. Otherwise the aerodynamic shape will remain the same. On the structural side there will be radical changes. A concentrated structural concept (CSC) will be used. Among the advantages of this concept possible weight reduction and damage tolerance are particularly important. In collaboration with students from the ETH in Zürich a design tool for ultra-light wing structures has been developed for streamlining design optimization using FEM. This work has also brought to light that the existing structural design regulations do not adequately cover aircraft in the new class of ultra-light high efficiency gliders. This deficiency in the regulations needs to be addressed. The first-hand experience gained by the in-flight failure will certainly also flow into the structural design of the next pilot protection structure and systems. Exulans II will have at hand all the previously used test equipment. It is planned to design Exulans II to be launched from a special launch and transportation trailer by pay-out winch. Such a launch system could provide a safe way into the air for its maiden flight. It will also provide a convenient method of performing the later flight evaluation. |
